Antique Lamps: Wick Lamps

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

On weekends I like to go to yard sales. I like to purchase many items but my personal favorite is antique lamps. There are many types of antique lamps. Most people are interested in oil lamps. Oil lamps are divided into two groups: pressurized lamps with a mantle and wick lamps. My personal favorite is wick lamps. Wick lamps have a reservoir bottom which holds the oil, and the wick feeds up through a rolling mechanism which regulates the size of the flame. The lamp is topped with a glass chimney. The tops and bottoms of the lamps were usually decorated with drawings or paintings.

The New Rules For Area Rugs

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

Gone is the old rule that an area rug has to be covered in flowers, placed in a formal setting, and never walked on or touched by anyone. You would also almost never find area rugs in homes with children or pets. Now, however, you can find modern contemporary area rugs in the homes of almost everyone, and especially children. You can find these rugs in the living room, family room, kitchen, playroom, bedrooms, and even outside on the patio. Also, everyone can accent their homes with these rugs without saving up for a year or two to afford them. With area rugs being so usable and affordable, it’s no surprise why they are growing in popularity still.

Interior Design For Your Bedroom

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

While doing your bedroom interior design, you can be as experimental and creative as you want. The bedroom is your personal place and there are no sneak peaks. Therefore, you can put anything you like in your bedroom.

One thing that must be kept in mind while decorating the bedroom is comfort. Whatever objects you may choose, they must be comfortable. It is a place for your personal activities and relaxation. Therefore, the furniture you select must be comfortable. The other objects of the room must compliment the theme selected by you. Wooden beds, carved beds, or antique beds coupled with the matching cabinets and side tables would solve the purpose perfectly.

Together in Harmony

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

In coming up with interior decorating ideas, it’s important to get a sense of what your decorating space looks like now.  Is it big??  Small??  If, for example, you have a small living room space, large objects such as grand pianos would not be a proper fit.  Be sure your interior decorating ideas include a sense of balance in the decorating space.  You can achieve symmetry by the placement of accessories around your main decorative pieces.  Always remember to present proper color contrast with whatever styles you use to decorate your space.

I bought my grandmother a scented gel candle for Christmas.

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

I never know what to buy my grandmother for Christmas. This year, I bought her two fleece outfits and slipper socks to match each one. One outfit was the color purple. The other was peach in color. I bought her a plaque that had a saying about grandmothers on it. There were purple flowers on it too. I also bought her a scented gel candle. It looked as though there were peaches suspended in the gel. She just loved her gifts. I was relieved, as I wasn't sure she would be happy with any of them.

Slipcovers Can Eliminate The Need To Reupholster

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

Are you faced with having tired, worn out furniture? Do your sofa cushions look like they've led a full life and need to be retired. Well, before you buy new furniture or have it reupholstered, consider adding some new slipcovers instead.

Why a new slipcover? Obviously, buying a new sofa, sectional or recliner is very expensive. And taking your furniture in to the upholstery shop is expensive also. On the other hand, sofa slip covers or other types of slipcovers are not only inexpensive, but they can dramatically change the decor in your home as well. These are only two of the reasons for their growing popularity.

My great grandmother raised her children by crocheting rag rugs.

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

I never knew my great grandmother. She passed away before I was born. My grandmother and my mother tell me stories about her though. I wish I would have had the chance to know her. I think she would have been a woman that I would have looked up to and admired. She raised her children by crocheting rag rugs. She and her husband had parted. He moved away and left her with three children to raise. The kids were young, so rather than get a job outside of the home, she worked out of her home. She washed and ironed clothes for people, she cooked meals for individuals, and she made hand crafted items such as rugs to sell.

Cheap Christmas Decorations to Spice Up the Home

Thursday, December 6th, 2007

There are some beautiful cheap Christmas decorations to spice up the home without spending a fortune. For example, you can take candles that you already have around the home and pin Christmas ribbon to them. This will convert them to an inexpensive Christmas decoration for your home. Another fun thing to do is fill bowls with fruits and candies and set them about the house. They can then be eaten and refilled throughout the holiday season. It is money you would already spend for snacks but you can decorate with them while you enjoy the great tasting fruit.

furniture layout

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

For bedroom design ideas, try to change the furniture layout of your room. This will expose different wall areas to your eyes revealing a different aspect of the bedroom. You can apply wallpaper to this newly exposed bedroom wall and create the feel of a new room. If applying wallpaper on the entire wall is not affordable, just apply the borders with a design of your choice and paint the wall with a contrasting color and see the difference. Are picture frames too expensive? then why not paint a small picture directly on the wall. You don’t have to be a great artist for this. Certain finishes such as faux, can be used to create a pattern of design on the wall to make it interesting. if you are living on rent then obviously you will have to take permission of the apartment owner to do this.
