Putting It All Together: Straight-Through

In putting together a cat 5 cable, there are two types to keep in mind:  straight-through – which is a cable passing data directly from one end to another; and crossover – which connects two computers without the need for a hub or switch.  In the case of straight-through cables, this type of cat 5 cable is put together by cutting the wires nice and straight; then, strip an inch of insulation from the cable.  Follow that by untwisting the inner wires, then realigning them according to Telecommunications Industry Association standards.  Clip them to the same length, and attach the RJ-45 connector.
