A good definition of phishing is an unsolicited email that asks you to update your account details or provide personal details through a bogus third party site. Often this site purports to be a major corporation. The email has the same look and feel but typically lacks the professionalism of the real thing. The third party sites are constructed for the short term exercise of extracting details form individuals who volunteer personal information. You should always avoid bogus emails and learn how to recognize them.
